First off, the episode was great and I highly recommend it. Second, Castillo talked about a new product he developed, the AC Performance Systems AC Band. This product is the improved version of the AC system that was attached to the goggles. I never tried, what I call the first generation, so comparing that to this new product isn’t going to happen. I am however going to give a first impression review of the most current cutting edge product.
Per the AC Performance System’s website, “The purpose of our nasal band is to enhance your nasal breathing ability. Studies show the nasal breathing is the only way to properly condition the air you breathe for the optimum performance, endurance and focus.” This is conveniently located on the back of the packaging. I imagine this is the motocross definition. From what I recall from the Pulp MX episode, there is some legitimate science behind the R&D that goes into this product.
I ordered the product through their website, www.acperformancesystems.com, a relatively quick process. The only negative about ordering online was making sure I got the correct sizing. Castillo said they are still working on a better sizing diagram to help people during the ordering process. I’d imagine developing this is tough, considering everyone’s nose is different.
The sizes range from 0-3, with 0 being the smallest. I ordered a 1 and they threw in a zero as well, which I thought was pretty cool. I mean, who doesn’t like free stuff, right?
Shipping took less than 5 days. But, I’m in Nor-Cal, so shipping is usually quick from the L.A. area. I was frequently updated with a shipping status via email, which for my OCD, is a nice perk.
When I received the small package I eagerly opened it to see what I just purchased. I was imagining a breath right style on steroids, and that’s exactly how I described it to my wife.
The package includes, 1 Magnetic nose band (they hooked me up with an additional size 0) 20 nasal strips, 10 alcohol wipes, and one applicator. There is also simple “how to apply” instructions on the inside label which is pictured below.
My first time trying this on was just hanging out with my family. I immediately felt my nasal passage grow larger. That the product was secure on my nose and wasn’t going to fall off during motos. The difference between the size 0 and the size 1 was noticeable and I liked the 0 better, as it felt more secure.
My first ride using the product just happened to be my first ride back after coming off a small knee injury. I rode a few laps around Riverfront MX to scout the track and warm up first and then came back to the pits to put on the nasal strip.
I used my truck mirror to make sure the nose applicators went on correctly. I made sure to clean my nose with alcohol prep to ensure the applicator magnets stuck in place correctly. I put on the Magnetic nose band and instantly felt my nasal passages open up. Again, I felt like the size 0 was the best fit.
As a kid, I suffered from asthma, and I still have a tendency to breathe pretty hard. I think every bit of O2 matters in all sports, especially motocross. After putting in my laps, I found this product allows your nasal passages to be opened to the maximum! I’ve always liked ‘breath right’ strips while riding, so this product is right up my alley.
The AC Performance Systems Band didn’t interfere with my helmet or goggles, nor did I notice it during my practice motos.
If you’re one of those people that has used nasal breathing products in the past, I highly recommend you give this product a try. For me, it will be in my gear bag from now on.
You only get one first impression, and this was a home run. Thank you.
